My New Favourite Band – The Vaudeville Smash
By Claudia | Reviews6 Apr 2011
It is time to divulge my musical guilty pleasure. I really like Kenny Loggins. Alright, I said it. I truly believe that “Footloose” is one of the best songs ever made and watching Kevin Bacon dance to it, still makes me simmer with excitement. So, what’s the point of this confession, except for embarrassing myself?
Yesterday I discovered The Vaudeville Smash. Unsuspectingly listening to the latest SXSW playlist, their song “Drunken Cowgirl” came across my ears…and heart. The Vaudeville Smash sound is like The Doobie Brothers meet Curtis Mayfield and Kenny Loggins on the Love Boat. Or as The Vaudeville Smash itself calls it: Nouveau Yacht Rock.
For those of you who haven’t heard about Yacht Rock before, you should check out the Channel 101 website and watch (or download) some episodes of this totally hilarious mockumentary. The series is about Soft Rock Stars between the mid-seventies and mid-eighties, including Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald or Hall & Oates and how famous songs of this era came into being.
The Vaudeville Smash is a six piece band from Melbourne, founded by three brothers (who started their career by playing Bee Gees and Roxette cover songs in a band called “The 3 Gees”) and named after an Italian children’s karaoke machine.
The band has already released the EP “Hey, It’s The Vaudeville Smash” and the single “Roller Disco“. According to their website, the debut album will be out in September this year. Until then you should totally buy the EP and watch their videos.
