It is surely fair to say that Love is a journey. From the dizzying exhilaration of first falling in love, through the giddy rollercoaster whirl of even the less rocky relationships, to what can seem like an inevitably lonely conclusion – only to fall anew sometime later. Love is beautiful, brutal, and unapologetic, and it has provided fantastic inspiration for music that can make your heart skip a beat, amplify a love-lorn sigh, or merely soundtrack your tears and kisses while tugging at your heart strings. Perhaps we can all understand how Burt Bacharach must have felt when he wrote ‘I’ll Never Fall in Love Again’ – but we all know we’ll surrender to Love’s silky charms once more.
From ancient songs of wives waiting on the shore for their lost fishermen to return brought new life by Emiliana Torrini, to John Lennon’s paeans to his lost mother, even The Divine Comedy’s tongue-in-cheek ode to all the material things lost in a lifetime, themes of love and loss have inspired everyone from Elton John to Napalm Death. ‘Jolene’, Dolly Parton’s tale of confronting the woman who has turned her husband’s head, has been covered by everyone from Laura Marling to the White Stripes, Mood Indigo, Wuthering Heights, Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man, Everybody Hurts, even Total Eclipse of the Heart…the list goes on and on.
In aid of those who have lost so much, where more fitting a place to go to mourn and celebrate than Union Chapel. A special journey through music, words and images that will make you laugh, sing and cry – and believe it truly is better to have loved and lost.
About Marginalised:
Marginalised aims to bring awareness of the issue of homelessness and raising money for The Margins Project, which provides invaluable services and facilities to the homeless people in the area. In the current ‘credit’ climate the Project has witnessed a substantial increase in numbers of people vulnerable to homelessness and destitution and a decrease in funding. Money raised from the Marginalised events will help the project provide these much needed services. As well as Songs of Love & Loss, there will also be a special Marginalised Curry Quiz Night onSaturday 23rd October at the Union Chapel. The £18.50 ticket price includes a two course Indian buffet, glass of wine, quiz prizes and dancing until late.
